Helping A Customer Who Helps Others

"I've been in this home for 62 years," says Ruby Thompson, gesturing toward her San Antonio-area home. "I enjoy it. I love it. I love my community," she says, beaming with pride.

Last year, she and her husband decided to upgrade their windows with new, energy-efficient window replacements. After talking with a few companies, they chose Window Nation.

They made the down payment, and their custom windows were built and waiting in the warehouse. All that was needed was the balance and to schedule an installation date. "We had these windows sitting in the warehouse for two months, and we needed to finish the job," says Steven Pekar, Sales Manager of the San Antonio office.

Steven had stopped by the house several times to see what could be done. "As I went there, I learned more and more about her and kind of put the pieces together. Life's changed since we started this four months ago."

Since purchasing the windows, Ruby's husband of 63 years had passed away.

"This wasn't somebody who doesn't want to pay," Steven explains. "This is somebody who is on a very fixed income, did something with us and now, due to other factors, she was in a tough situation."

After talking it over with San Antonio's Operations Manager, Eric Johnson, and Regional Operations Director, Dan Crawford, the three of them decided that Ruby would be a good candidate for the Window Nation Cares program.

"For Ruby, it's not about her," says Steven. "Ruby cares about everybody else. She's doing a lot of good in the community. This is somebody we would want to do something for,"

That's why Window Nation decided to donate the windows to Ruby.

Steven laughs. "I remember having to call her and say, ‘this is legit, we're going to do this.' She didn't believe me at first."

"I'm just overjoyed about my new windows," says Ruby with her signature big, lovely smile. "Everybody at Window Nation was very nice, and I really did appreciate that. It felt like Christmas - I'm just overjoyed like a child at Christmas time."

"It was really cool to do something like that," Steven says with a smile. "Here in San Antonio, we have a very deep culture. People live here for generations. They don't move. Ruby, she'd been in the house 62 years. They moved in months after they got married."

Six months later, Ruby is still happy with her replacement windows. "When I sit near the windows, I don't feel as much heat as I used to. That was the main reason that I was getting them. It was too hot coming through the windows and it was uncomfortable."

Steven and Ruby still keep in touch. "I went by there and checked on her, to see how she was doing. She was doing great. She's out to church. She's going to help somebody else."

Then, leaning back in his chair, Steven turns his head and looks out his office window contemplatively. After a pause, he smiles and nods his head. "Ruby, she's a special person. She is doing some good."
