At Window Nation, we take pride in finding the right windows for our customers. Making happy customers is what we do. But sometimes this can be a challenge. We admit it. There are a ton of choices, and more options than you can shake a stick at. One example is double hung and slider windows. While both of these can add great functionality to a home, there are a lot of differences. Knowing these differences can help you to make a decision that you’ll be happy with for years to come.

The biggest difference between these two window types is the way they slide. While slider windows have the word “slide” in their name, they aren’t the only ones that do this. Double hung windows can slide too. The difference is that slider windows slide side to side. Double hung windows slide up and down. But even in this, there are several options to consider. If you decide to go with double hung windows, you’re going to have to decide if you want the top and bottom windows to slide, or have one slide and one be fixed. Our slider windows come with two active panels or a three-panel end vent style configuration that can be quarter-half-quarter or third-third-third. If you are scratching your head, don’t worry. When you have Window Nation take care of your window project, we will send an educated professional right to your home. They’re not salespeople. Their job is to help you figure out the details of each of these windows. There is no obligation to buy. What you do with the information is up to you. For now, we’re going to stay on topic and continue with the differences between these two window types. We’ll cover those other details at the appropriate time.

The next biggest difference between double hung windows and slider windows is directly associated with what space you’re trying to fill. If you have an area that would look better with a window that is taller than it is wide, double hung windows will be the best choice. If you want a wider window option, slider windows are the way to go. Sliders can be significantly wider than they are tall. If the area you’re looking to open up is more than a single slider window can cover, you may decide that putting a double hung on each side will give you what you need. But, at the end of the day, a single double hung window will always have less width than a slider window.

If you have a room that needs an air conditioner, double hung windows are going to be the better choice. While it is possible to put an air conditioner in a slider window, it is not as easy as sliding the top pane up, plopping that air conditioner in place, pulling out the left and right wings, and sliding the top pane back down to hold the unit in place. You’re going to have to be more creative with a slider window.

You may have been told that double hung windows are easier to clean than slider windows. We hear this a lot. But this is actually one area where these two aren’t so different. While the features may be different, the result is the same. If you want windows that are easy to clean, no matter what level of your home they are on, you’ll be fine with either of these window types. Our sliders come with a lift out version that allows the sash to be lifted out for easy cleaning, and a swinging version which swings open like a door. Both make slider windows a breeze to clean. You’re not going to have to hire a window cleaner or get out the ladder to keep your new slider windows clean. You’re just going to have more window allowing the sun to fill your home and more of a view of your yard.
