The Brooklyn O’Malley Club is one of the clubs run by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Baltimore. They operate after-school and summer programs for local children from elementary through high school age. Brooklyn O’Malley Club underwent a physical makeover thanks to the WMAR program

“Built Upon a Dream provides a great opportunity to use our unique position as a broadcaster to connect organizations in need and local businesses that can offer solutions,” said Bill Hooper, vice president and general manager for WMAR. “For our entire team, from news to sales to production, it is a team effort and a labor of love.”

This Built Upon a Dream project, benefitting The Brooklyn O’Malley Club, included improvements throughout the building. Workers improved everything from flooring, painting, electrical, furniture, windows, fencing and landscaping at the club. The work was completed by a group of contractors, suppliers and associated companies who make up the Built Upon a Dream team. All team member companies donated time, labor, materials and supplies to get the job done. Many of the individual corporate donations are valued at more than $25,000. The Built Upon a Dream team includes Window Nation, Manekin Construction, Under Armour, Sagamore Development, T. Rowe Price, Taco Bell, Toyota Financial Services, Nations Photo Lab, Yogibo, Fence & Deck Connection, Ruppert Landscape, Lowes, Hord Coplan Macht, BCT Architects as well as many sub-contractors, suppliers and volunteers.

Throughout our extensive service area of Northeast Ohio, Washington D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and Northern Virginia, parents are sending their kids back to school, and many frugal parents are taking advantage of tax holidays. What is a tax holiday? It is when state governments drop the taxes on certain purchased goods that have particular significance like back to school gear for families preparing their kids for school. But this tax break is only for a limited time.

If you live in our Maryland service area, we have good news! Tax-free week for 2016 is from August 14-20. That means there is still time for you to take advantage of this discount!

There are some restrictions, however. The Maryland tax week only applies to clothing and footwear. It does not cover school supplies or computers, like in Alabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. And, qualifying clothing and footwear must be under $100. But, hey! That is still a really good deal, especially if this is the one time of year when you get out and buy clothes for your kids. The more clothing and footwear you buy, the more you’re really going to feel the relief.

School supplies aren’t the only items that get a special tax holiday. Some states drop taxes for hurricane equipment and generators in preparation for the hurricane season. In Louisiana, they have a tax holiday for firearms, ammunition, and hunting supplies to help bolster the fall hunting season; and some states give tax relief for ENERGY STAR items, to help defer the cost of electricity. In fact, February 18-20 of 2017, Maryland will have its next tax free week on these items.

Current ENERGY STAR items that are known to be tax-free during February 13-15, 2017 tax free days are air conditioners, washers and dryers, furnaces, heat pumps, boilers, solar water heaters, standard size refrigerators, dehumidifiers, programmable thermostats, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and LED light bulbs. For a detailed list of qualifying ENERGY STAR products that are eligible for tax exemption, visit www.marylandtaxes.com.

At Window Nation, we have a wide selection of windows that are ENERGY STAR compliant, but the focus of Maryland’s ENERGY STAR tax exemption seems focused on helping to reduce electricity consumption in the state. When it sets its sights on helping families and business reduce their heating and cooling costs, we’ll let you know because that is where Window Nation ENERGY STAR windows shine. Until then, get out there and enjoy the discount for school footwear and clothing, compliments of Uncle Sam! Every little bit counts.

This is the time of year when everyone starts preparing for the holiday season. With Christmas still more than a month away and Thanksgiving only a week away, there is a lot you need to consider to prepare your home for the holiday visitors that will be descending on you soon! The professionals at Window Nation in Virginia, Maryland, D.C. and Ohio would like to offer you some helpful tips to prepare your home for the coming holiday season and the guests that will be joining you for your holiday festivities.

Make sure that your home is prepared for visitors that may arrive in the evening hours. It gets dark very early this time of year, so making sure that all the exterior lights around your home are working is a very good idea to help keep visitors safe. If you have a walkway into your home that has any steps or rocks, have lights installed around the pathway to make sure your visitors don’t trip while coming into your home.

Prepare your living area by cleaning up clutter and dusting, making sure to dust in the high corners of rooms to remove any cobwebs that have appeared. You should also schedule a professional carpet cleaning this time of year to make sure your carpet is looking clean and fresh for when your visitors arrive.

Have your windows professionally cleaned as well. This is something you should have done once a year- windows both inside and out should have a good clean.

Make sure that your guest bedrooms are fully stocked with whatever your guests may need. A wall mirror, fresh towels and fresh bed linens are all things that should be present in your guest bedroom.

Once your home is prepared for the holidays, you can start thinking about the more important things like all the gift buying you still need to do and then the all-important holiday meal planning!

If you are living in an older home you may begin to notice the high traffic parts of your home including the entry doors are beginning to show wear and tear. Over the years doors can become troublesome to open and close and increasingly drafty. So many homeowners are faced with the question of whether to repair or to replace the entry doors. Although it may seem like an easier solution to repair what is already there, you may be surprised to know that replacement doors could end up saving you a lot of time and money down the line.

At Window Nation, there is a large array of door systems to best fit your home.

  • 75 different styles of doors

  • 35 different glass options

  • 40 different color and stain options

With all these choices you can be sure that you will find an option that best suits your home. Window Nation offers fiberglass and steel entry door systems, which are all custom made to be sure they fit your home’s opening and offer the highest quality. So how do these door systems save you money?

Energy efficiency is perhaps one of the best ways to save money with a door replacement. By replacing old, drafty doors with new doors that fit properly and contain energy efficient materials you will be able to stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter all while using less electricity. Your home will stay more comfortable all year round and save money on your heating and cooling costs.

Not only will you be saving money and the environment through energy efficiency, but you will also be increasing the value of your home by replacing the entry doors. Did you know that you can actually increase the perceived value of your home by tens of thousands of dollars from adding a new entry door system with Window Nation? Clearly, the best choice for homeowners across the country is to invest in high quality door replacements rather than repairing the old doors.

Only 4 companies in the United States receive this honor each year, and this year Window Nation was one of them!

GLEN BURNIE, Md., April 3, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Window Nation has been awarded a 2012 Replacement Contractor Service Excellence Award. The awards recognize home improvement companies for excellent customer service and were announced at the Replacement Contractor Executive Conference, an annual gathering of industry executives held this year in Las Vegas. The Replacement Contractor Service Excellence Award is based on surveys of customers by GuildQuality, a third-party verification service specializing in the residential construction industry and a partner with Replacement Contractor in presenting the award.

GuildQuality randomly sampled 50 recent customers of Window Nation, asking homeowners to rate the company on different aspects of service. The survey firm also asked homeowners to indicate whether or not they’d recommend the company to those they knew, or hire the company to work for them again.

“Giving great customer service is an important part of our community culture,” says Window Nation President and Co-Founder Harley Magden.

“Today, when just about any homeowner reads a company’s online reviews before picking up the phone, it’s critical to leave behind a customer who’s happy, even thrilled, with the work done and the experience of having it done,” says Jim Cory, Editor, Replacement Contractor.

Selection of the winners involved having homeowners rate companies on service aspects such as communication, the sales process, and product quality; identify any areas where company personnel fell short; and indicate whether or not they’d recommend the company to others. Winners were selected on the basis of overall scores, recommendation rate, and response rate to surveys.

Window Nation was founded by brothers Harley and Aaron Magden after they worked for years in their father’s window business. Headquartered in the Baltimore area, Window Nation operates in Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina.
