Energy Loss Through Old And Drafty Windows

There’s no excuse for the money you toss out the window in the form of energy loss. Your old drafty windows are not doing you any favors, besides keeping the Ohio bugs out! You actually might be surprised at the figures and percentages of our country’s energy that is used by residential homes. A whopping 25% of our country’s energy is used by homes alone!  And what is even more shocking is how windows are responsible for $35 billion that homeowners lose in air-conditioning and heating costs each year (as reported by Energy Star).  And although you may know your windows have had it and its time to replace them, sometimes there’s not enough wiggle room in the budget to allot spending on replacement windows. So, from the professionals at Window Nation in Ohio, here are some tips to help make your home energy efficient.

  • To reflect the heat of the sun away from your house, install white window shades or drapes.

  • Take a good look at your home and family’s lighting needs and look for ways to use sensors, timers or dimmers to reduce your electricity usage.

  • Don’t let ‘stand-by’ mode drain your pocket. When TVs, computers and other electronic devices are turned off but are in stand-by mode, they are still using electricity. Plug all these electronic devices into power strips so that they can all be turned off at the source with one flip of a switch.

  • Don’t wash partial loads of laundry or dishes; make sure your loads are full before you set your washer going.

  • Instead of using your clothes dryer, consider hanging clothes out to dry.

  • Look for Energy Star rated light bulbs, home office equipment, appliances and electronics so that you know the items you use every day meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the US EPA and the US Dept of Energy.

  • Regularly replace filters on furnaces and air conditioners so that they are running efficiently.

  • Defrost manual defrost freezers and refrigerators so that they are working efficiently; frost build-up in these appliances can decrease the energy efficiency of the unit. Use the rule of thumb that frost build-up of over ¼ of an inch is the time at which you should defrost.

These tips should save you some money on your heating and cooling bills without having to replace those old drafty windows. Unfortunately, those leaky windows are costing you 10-25% of your heating bill and they’re also making your air conditioning system work overtime during the hot summers. So, if you have finally realized that the most energy savings will come from new replacement windows and you can no longer afford to be sending your money out the window, look no further than the double-pane windows with low-e coating that are available from Window Nation. These windows are excellent at reducing energy waste in your home, keeping your energy bills lower and keeping you more comfortable all year long.  Contact us today for more information on the replacement window options we can offer for your Ohio home and start reaping the rewards of your new replacement windows!
